Description |
Firefighter coat: dark olive green color with yellow neon nylon fabric attached to ceneter and on sleeves and around lower edge. Right sleeve in blue ink: UNIS. Four metal hook buckles run down center. Collar is brown velvet One rectangular pocket on left chest and two large pockets on bottom part of coat with snap buttons and a piece of charocoal suede attached on top of each pocket. Left pocket has LT UNIS printed on it. Cuffs are line with same suede on the outside but on inside they are lined with extra jersey cuffs. The inside of coat is lined with another green fabric lined with an off white vinyl that is attached to the coat with snap buttons. The coat is very worn out, and fading, holes in pocket and scratches and tears in the fabric, also stains and soot residues. A first generation Arab American, Don Unis was born and raised in Dearborn. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960, where he was stationed in Germany. Between 1961- 1966, Don worked at the General Motor Company. In 1966, Don joined the Dearborn Fire Department, while continuing his education at Henry Ford Community College and the University of Michigan-Dearborn. He graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor's degree in Education. During his career, Don's division won more citations and medals of valor -- medals of honors for outstanding courage, than the other five other divisions combined. He retired as captain in 1997. One of the founders of ACCESS, Don has been honored as a lifetime member on its Board of Directors. As a community activist for the Arab American community, Don has been the recipient of fifteen awards and he says this to his community, "Be very proud of your Arab heritage, but also be proud of the promise that America's future has for you." Don and his wife Nancy have raised four children in Dearborn's Arab American community. |
