Description |
A navy T-shirt with the words "Freedom for Ziad" printed on the front. The shirt belonged to Vicki Tamoush, who served as the Executive Director for the West Coast office of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. The shirts were made as part of a campaign advocating for the release of Ziad Abu Ein, who served in the Fatah political party, the Palestinian Authority, and the Palestinian Liberation Organization. In 1981, he became the first Palestinian to be extradited by the United States to Israel and was subsequently sentenced to life in prison. A few years later in 1985, he would be released as part of a prisoner exhange agreement. However, unfortunately, Abu Ein would face several rearrests upon his release. He was legally represented by Felicia Langer, a prominent Israeli attorney who was one of the sole voices advocating for Palestinians. Tamoush included this account of attempting to visit Abu Ein in prison during a visit to Palestine in 1981: "We were, of course, refused a visit but I was wearing this t-shirt that day as well. Felicia [Langer] later said that we might have done better if we'd not mentioned our support of Ziad and of her. But then again, I don't think anyone could get in to see Ziad, no matter who they were." |
