Description |
Amadeus brand violin from donor Michael Ibrahim's collection. Michael Ibrahim is Michigan-based musican and conductor. He founded the National Arab Orchestra in 2009. In Arabic, the violin is usually called kamanjah, or kaman. The Western violin is now a standard member of the traditional Arab orchestra. Toward the middle of the 19th century, it became a member of the Egyptian takht ensemble, thereby replacing the kamanjah (a two-string spike fiddle with a sound-box made from a coconut shell) and subsequently usurping its name. In turn the older instrument replaced and took the name of yet another fiddle called rababah. The violin, a fretless instrument, is favored for its agility and tonal flexibility. Typically its strings are tuned G3, D4, G4, D5. |
