Icon of Rev. Raphael Hawaweeny This religious icon depicts Saint Raphael of Brooklyn, canonized as an Orthodox Saint in 2000. Born in Beirut in 1860, Raphael Hawaweeny came to Little Syria in 1895 to serve the faithful. He went on to establish St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral in Brooklyn and dozens of other Orthodox churches and parishes throughout North America. In 1905, Hawaweeny launched the Arabic-language magazine Al-Kalimah (The Word), which is still in publication today. Bishop Hawaweeny was honored by Orthodox Christian priests, deacons and bishops upon his death in 1915. Founder of nearly 30 parishes across the continent, Hawaweeny's death made headlines nationwide. |
