Description |
Bahia Shehab's "No, and a Thousand Times No" (2013) Black and blue spray paint on red poster board, 20" x 27.5" A lamalif (Arabic for "no") is spray painted in black, and a blue bra is spray painted in blue underneath. Scattered on walls throughout Cairo is the Arabic word la (no), stenciled in different styles by artist Bahia Shehab. These icon-slogans refer to specific incidents that took place during the 2011 revolution; the public stripping of the Blue Bra Girl, book burnings and military rule. The work as a whole represents broader demands of security and civilian rule, and allows for wider audience interaction. |
