Description |
ab) qanun, or zither, and storage case; (a) qanun has a flat trapezoidal sound box decorated at top with intricate carved openwork rosettes, such that three are circular and one is roughly paisley-shaped; one short side features green geometric surface decoration. The qanun is strung across the top with some 26 triple courses of strings held in place by 75 knobs with black heads. It is traditionally played with two plectrums held through metal rings on the player's index fingers, and is equipped with sets of small metal levers that are lifted or lowered while playing to change the pitch of each string-course by microtonal increments. Qanun is housed in (b) a light blue painted wooden box in the same trapezoidal shape as (a); lined at interior to protect the instrument. |
