"Nazha Detroit, 1943" ; mixed media collage, 9"x12" Artist Statement, 2010: "My grandmother, Nazha Kuri Saad, was born on Dec. 14, 1883, in the village of Naffakhiye in southern Lebanon. She came to the United States with her husband, Masad Saad, in 1904 and they lived shortly in Lansing, Michigan before settling in Detroit where he opened a grocery store. She traveled back to Lebanon with her two young children, Sarah and Khalil, in 1913 for a visit but was unable to return to the U.S. until after World War I in 1919. Reunited with my grandfather, they had two more children, David (my father) and Samuel. My grandfather died suddenly in 1926, and she found work in a cigar factory to support her children. She died in 1956. This collage features a photo of her, dated 1943, in the yard of her home on Maine Street in north Detroit. My earliest childhood memories are of Sunday visits there filled with family, food, and love. The composition is inspired by the iconography of the Melkite church, Our Lady of Redemption, which our family attended" |
