Description |
Nearly square sampler with an off white cream satin ground, with a heart-shaped border containing hand-embroidered floral motifs in polychrome silk and at the very center, a 5.5" x 3.5" black and white photographic print of the donor's mother, Emelia Musallem Hagopian, when she was a young woman, that has been adhered to the surface. The edges are unfinished, though a linen backing has been loosely stitched to the satin at its edges and secured by the embroidery and an adhesive substance. Before departing Damascus for Cuba in 1926, Emelia Musallem gave this to one of her relatives there as a reminder of her; during one the donor's later visits to Damascus, the piece was given to her. |
