Teacup (part of a set of six) handpainted in a floral design in tones of blue and red. Heleneh Howie Nader was born in Dhour Shweir, Lebanon and graduated from the school of nursing at the American University of Beirut in 1922. She worked in various capacities, rising to the Head of Nursing at the hospital. She became involved in public health nursing, travelling to rural areas and villages in Lebanon, Syria and Palestine. In the early 30s she received a scholarship from the Rockefeller Foundation to study public health nursing in the United States and travelled among several sates learning about the organization and management of different models in the field. Upon returning to Lebanon, she established a public health program under AUB. As part of her work, she continued to travel to rural areas. As she travelled, she acquired many examples of arts and crafts including pottery, weavings, brass, needlework, carved and inlaid wood, and jewelry adding to some items she inherited from her mother. Heleneh got married in 1935 to a Lebanese man who was a naturalized US citizen and they returned to the States shortly after. She enjoyed using the pottery for elaborate teas and luncheons, in Lebanon and with fellow Arab Americans in Arizona where she settled. |
