Description |
Mizwij made of two reed pipes joined with wax or tar, decorated with two small blue beads at the bottom. Made by Nadim Dlaikan, winner of the 1994 Michigan Herigage Award. A virtuoso nay player, Nadim carves his own flutes from bamboo he grows in his back yard. Mijwiz: a folk reed-pipe consisting of two identical melody-tubes, each of which is fitted with a vibrating single-reed. Played through the technique of "circular-breathing," which enables the performer to maintain a continuous sound throughout the performance, the mijwiz has been traditionally heard at village weddings, often to accompany the dabkah, the lively line-dance prevalent in the rural areas of the Eastern Arab world. |
