Description |
Hand-made Lebanese Flag made by the donor and flown from his Sno-Cat while traversing the Antarctic continent. The flag is comprised of three panels, two red, one white, arranged horizontally. In the center of the white panel, the donor painted the cedar tree in light green paint. On the back of the flag near the folded over strip the flag would have been flown from is written the donor's last name "DOUMANI" in English and in Arabic. Dr. Doumani had sought to acquire a Lebanese flag before leaving on his exposition, but departed before it arrived. He made this one with his own hands using his pillow case and two pieces of red cloth that were used as trail markers. He enlarged the cedar tree from a postage stamp, drafted it in the center of the flag, and painted it with green India Ink. According to Doumani, "Whenever any of us conversed on ham radio with other world ham operators, it became standard statement while describing the desolate Antarctic continent to say, 'There is not a single blade of grass and not a single tree, except one cedar tree.'" A veteran of five scientific expeditions to Antarctica, George Doumani is the only Arab American to have explored the continent's interior. Doumani's research as a geologist helped prove the theory of continental drift. Two geographical features in Antarctica have been named for him by the National Board of Geographic Names. They are Mount Doumani and Doumani Peak. |
