Description |
Photo of Kay Elder with Palestinian flag Kay Elder was an icon in Dearborn, Michigan's South End where she settled with her family in 1954. Through her fighting spirit and pursuit of human rights, the long-time activist "Hajja" gained local and national respect. In the 1960s she, along with other members of her community, stood in front of bulldozers to stop the demolition of homes during the City of Dearborn's attempts to transform the South End residential neighborhood into an industrial area. In 1972, she returned with her family to her hometown Beit Hanina in Palestine. There she was nicknamed "Um Al Khair," Mother of Good Deeds, as she touched the lives of thousands of Palestinian refugees and orphans. By assuming non-traditional roles of activist, entrepreneur, humanitarian, and philanthropist, Kay Elder was a pioneer in the advancement of women both here and in Palestine. |
