Description |
Digital photograph 1946 Family. JPG After living in the United States for 82 years, Mary Korkmas finally took the Oath of Allegiance to become an American citizen on June 25th, 1986. She had arrived at Ellis Island from Greater Syria with her mother in 1904, when she was just three years old. Unfortunately, the 1916 fire at Ellis Island destroyed her entry papers, along with countless others. However, it was not until 1950 that she realized that she was not a citizen. After three failed attempts to gain her citizenship, she turned her attention towards raising her family in Texas. In 1984, she met her friend, Gayla Lawson, who helped her with the citizenship process. Mary said that although she only officially became a U.S. citizen at the age of 85, she felt like a citizen for 82 years. |
