Appears on page 73 of the book Arab Americans in Metro Detroit: Aliya Hassen was one of Arab Americas' most effective leaders. Born in South Dakota in 1910 to Lebanese-Muslim immgrants, she was a strong and tireless adavocate for Arab Americans and Islam until her death in 1990. Aliya Hassen was a guiding force in the development ACCESS. Under her direction, ACCESS provided language classes, food, housing and translation services to new immigrants.
