Description |
Black and white studio portrait depicting Elias Saleh, his wife Zahia "Leah" and their two oldest children, Nabiha "Rosa" and Nabih "Charles" Saleh (later anglicized Salley). Elias wears a dark suit with decoratve fob draped from the buttons to the chest pocket, tie, and prominent mustache; he is seated at the same turned wood armchair seen at 2005.26.06h, with a young Charles leaning against him, holding a white artificial rose. His sister Rosa, holds a bouquet of artificial blossoms; and leans gently against her mother's dark skirt. Leah wears a white shirtwaist with high neck and slightly puffed sleeves, and full, pinned-up hair; her bodice is decorated with necklaces and/or brooches. The family is situated in front of a mottled, non-descript background with suggestions of palms or plant fronds at the back left; traces of a patterned rug are seen beneath them; the print is marked in ink, in Arabic, along the bottom which translates to "To our uncle abo mareb, this is our picture", suggesting the print was given to a brother of Zahia "Leah" Marieb. The print is mounted on a dark blue-black board, embossed at bottom center "Baron / 49 MONROE / DETROIT" |
