Arab Americans In Metro Detroit |
Description |
Black and white photograph of a large family (adults, children and babies) seated and standing under an arched structure - possibly a fountain or well. Appears on page 12 of the book Arab Americans in Metro Detroit. Caption: Photographed here is the Denha family of Tell Keif, Iraq, shortly before their departure for the United States in 1949. Detroit is the home of a large Chaldean community, a Catholic minority from Iraq. In the 1960s, a larger wave of Chaldean immigrants came to the Detroit area, and continued to arrive during the 1970s and 1980s. Since the 1990 Gulf War, the number of Christian and Muslim Iraqi immigrants in the Detroit area has increased dramatically. (Courtesy of Amir Denha) |
