Korkmas had arrived at Ellis Island from Greater Syria with her mother in 1904, when she was just three years old. Unfortunately, the 1916 fire at Ellis Island destroyed her entry papers, along with countless others. However, it was not until 1950 that Mary Korkmas realized that she was not a citizen! After three failed attempts to gain her citizenship, Mary turned her attention towards raising her family in Texas. In 1984, Mary met her friend, Gayla Lawson, who helped Mary with citizenship process. Mary said that although she only officially became a U.S. citizen at the age of 85 years old, she felt like a citizen for 82 years. |
