He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960, where he was stationed in Germany. Between 1961- 1966, Don worked at the General Motor Company. In 1966, Don joined the Dearborn Fire Department, while continuing his education at Henry Ford Community College and the University of Michigan-Dearborn. He graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor's degree in Education. During his career, Don's division won more citations and medals of valor -- medals of honors for outstanding courage, than the other five other divisions combined. He retired as captain in 1997. One of the founders of ACCESS, Don has been honored as a lifetime member on its Board of Directors. As a community activist for the Arab American community, Don has been the recipient of fifteen awards and he says this to his community, "Be very proud of your Arab heritage, but also be proud of the promise that America's future has for you." Don and his wife Nancy have raised four children in Dearborn's Arab American community. |
