First edition of "The Prophet," by Kahlil Gibran, inscribed to Naoum Mokarzel, publisher of the newspaper Al-Hoda. Kahlil Gibran was born in Lebanon in 1883, and immigrated to the United States with his family before the turn of the 20th century. He was a poet, writer and artist. Is most famous work is the prose poetry book "The Prophet," originally published in 1923. It has been translated into over 100 languages and has never been out of print. Gibran revitalized the literary group al-rabitah al-qalamiyyah (commonly called the Pen League) in 1920 with Nasib Arida, Abd al-Masih Haddad and Mikhail Naimy and Ameen Rihani among others. |
