Title |
Port Said - Music of the Middle East |
Creator |
Mohammed El-Bakkar and his Oriental Ensemble |
Scope & Content |
Album from Mohammad El-Bakkar, a very popular multi-faceted artist who enjoyed success in the Middle East as well as the United States. El-Bakkar first rose to prominence as an opera singer and film actor. His arrival in the U.S. coincided with a boom of Western interest in Arabic music and culture. He became a regular on the hafla circuit and eventually launched into mainstream notoriety due to being cast in the Broadway hit "Fanny". This album is one in a series that Audio Fidelity Record produced with El-Bakkar called Music of the Middle East. These albums were advertised to primarily non-Arab audiences as can be assumed from the album cover and liner notes which rely heavily on commonly seen Orientalist tropes and imagery. |
